About the Book

Stalag Luft III Murders - The Unaltered Investigation

THE TRUE STORY BEHIND ‘THE GREAT ESCAPE’

STALAG LUFT III MURDERS, THE FULL TRUTH, THE REAL MEN, THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE.

In March 1944, 76 Allied airmen escaped from Stalag Luft III, the most secure prisoner of war camp in Germany. Only three made it to freedom. The rest were recaptured. Fifty were murdered on the orders of Hitler and the Gestapo. This book tells the untold story that followed the investigation, the evidence, the pursuit of justice, and the trials of those responsible.

This is not Hollywood. This is history.

WHY THE MURDER INVESTIGATION WAS SO IMPORTANT

The murders of the recaptured escapees were a blatant breach of the Geneva Convention and one of the most shocking war crimes of the Second World War. To ignore these crimes would have been to betray the memory of the fifty men who gave their lives and to allow those responsible to escape justice.

The investigation carried out by the Special Investigation Branch was about more than punishment—it was about establishing the truth, exposing a deliberate policy of murder ordered from the highest levels of the Nazi regime, and ensuring that such crimes would never be forgotten or repeated.

THE SIB DOCUMENT

The heart of this book is the original Special Investigation Branch (SIB) case file:Stalag Luft III Murders.

This official document contains witness statements, interrogations, intelligence reports, lists of the murdered officers, maps, photographs, and the findings of the investigation team who traced the orders, identified those involved, and built the case for war crimes trials.

It is a rare and powerful record—raw, authentic and unaltered. Many copies are incomplete or extremely difficult to read. This restored and cleaned document is presented here in its entirety so that the full truth can be read, understood and remembered.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR - ANTHONY BIRD

This is Anthony Bird’s first book about the Great Escape.

An avid RAF World War 2 enthusiast and reenactor, Anthony has always had a deep respect for the courage and sacrifice of those who served.

In March 2026, Anthony visited the Great Escape site at Stalag Luft III. Standing on that ground brought history to life and inspired him to learn more—especially about what happened after the escape.

As he began his research into the murders of the recaptured officers, Anthony quickly discovered that the main investigation document is very hard to find, and much of it is difficult to read. Determined to make this important piece of history accessible to others, he painstakingly cleaned, restored and prepared the original SIB document for this book.

This book is Anthony’s tribute to the fifty murdered officers, and to all who served.
